Our Teachers

Lauren Clark

Hi, I’m Lauren! For the past six years, I have been studying and working in the outdoor education field. I completed a bachelor’s program at Black Hills State University with an emphasis in wellness and science. In 2016, I became an outdoor skills instructor and began developing and facilitating recreation programs for youth. In 2018, I completed certifications and training through several organizations including REI, American Camp Association, Girl Scouts, Leave No Trace, and National Outdoor Leadership School. Specific interests of mine include primitive camping, outdoor cooking, nature journaling, and hiking. I am passionate about the natural world and enjoy sharing this passion with others. Since becoming a parent, my goal has been to educate and introduce concepts of conservation, environmental stewardship, and curiosity to my own child. I also believe that overall wellness can be improved by spending quality time in the outdoors. This path has led me to my newest adventure at Chesterfield Nature Academy!

Kathleen Skinner

Hi, I’m Kathleen! My family and I are recent transplants from Maryland and came to Virginia searching for a property where we could offer nature-based programs to preschool-aged children, including my own two sons. Growing up, I spent time camping, hiking, collecting rocks and fossils, and generally spending time outdoors. This is an experience I also want for my own children, despite the fact that it is becoming harder to connect with nature in our fast-paced lives. Having worked in the fitness industry for many years, I have a particular interest in making sure young people are equipped with the knowledge and habits they need to enjoy a healthy life. I believe that nature-based education and maintaining a close connection with the natural world is one of the best ways to ensure our children have these skills! I have an M.S. in Business Technology Management from Stevenson University, was a certified personal trainer for over 10 years, completed my RYT-200 in 2016, and most recently completed a Nature Based Teacher training course through the Eastern Region Association of Forest and Nature Schools (ERAFANS) in 2022. Outside of running the Chesterfield Nature Academy, I also work in Healthcare IT.
